The Black Dot Collection

Knowledge Is Golden.jpg

Experiencing dementia and the death of a beloved family member, often results in family trauma. Consequently, one then begins contemplating the role family plays in their lives.

Couple this contemplation with the frequent misconception of the African American family in American society, what became internalized and then represented in my art, led to the creation of the Black Dot Collection.

During my foray into this journey, I traveled to the past and began getting in touch with my family dynamics, what I have observed in general society and media et cetera, and the impact that it has had on my emotional life.

All artwork in this collection is on gallery wrapped canvas or watercolor papers. The medium is acrylic, oil pastels, charcoal, and pencil.

The first offering entitled, “Knowledge Is Golden” depicts African American parents nurturing education in their child. The bright bold colors in the painting give the feeling of hope, positivity, and determination.

The next paintings continue with the development of a primary

character named Dot. Her story chronicles her journey into recovery through the love and joy of self, family, and community.
